Saving Asher: A tale of hope and compassion

Asher

In a world full of uncertainty, some moments shine through and bring hope when it feels like all is lost. This is the story of Asher, a brave 6-year-old boy whose journey has been marked by resilience, love, and the timely intervention of the Calvin Ayre Foundation.

Asher’s Journey

Asher, a spirited child who loved toy cars, games like Minecraft and Roblox, and watching Cocomelon on YouTube, was like any other boy his age—full of energy, joy, and an infectious smile. He had a big appetite, especially for squash, adobo, and sinigang, and loved playing with his older brothers, who were his constant companions. But behind his bright spirit was a lifelong battle—Asher was born with a congenital heart condition, which became apparent when he came into the world as a “blue baby.”

Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and procedures throughout his young life, Asher’s battle against congenital heart disease persisted. Each procedure brought moments of relief followed by new challenges, but none as daunting as the prognosis delivered in early 2024. His condition had worsened, with complications affecting his liver, leaving the medical team with few options for further intervention.

The turning point

When all seemed lost, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of the Calvin Ayre Foundation. Moved by Asher’s plight, the foundation swiftly intervened, providing crucial financial support that enabled immediate medical attention. Without this timely aid, the scheduled stenting procedure—a lifeline for Asher—would have faced significant delays due to bureaucratic hurdles.

The foundation’s donation of PHP1,977,155.65 (US$35,486~) to date, not only covered the cost of Asher’s procedure but also offered his family a renewed sense of hope and possibility. It was a pivotal moment—a testament to the power of generosity in transforming lives.

The emotional journey

For Jerilyn Magdaraog, Asher’s mother, the foundation’s support was nothing short of miraculous. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she expressed, “Thank you, Lord, for sending us an angel.” Her unwavering faith and determination to fight for Asher’s life resonated deeply as she recounted the emotional rollercoaster of uncertainty and eventual relief.

Dr. Michie Gambe, Asher’s pediatric cardiologist, shared insights into his medical journey, highlighting Asher’s progress post-procedure. “Since the procedure, Asher has shown significant improvements—eating more, engaging with others, and regaining strength. We remain hopeful as we continue to monitor his recovery,” she noted.

Hope and gratitude

As Asher continues his recovery, supported by ongoing medical care and the love of his family, there is a renewed sense of hope. Jerilyn dreams of a future where Asher can enjoy simple joys like swimming at a water spa—a dream made possible by the foundation’s timely intervention.

In her message to Calvin Ayre, Jerilyn expressed heartfelt gratitude, “You are the reason why he is alive today.” Her words echo a sentiment shared by many whose lives have been touched by the foundation’s compassion and commitment to making a difference.

The gift of time

Despite the challenges, Asher’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of philanthropy and the strength of the human spirit. Thanks to the generosity of the Calvin Ayre Foundation, Asher has been given a second chance—to live, laugh, and dream. His future remains uncertain, but what’s certain is that this generosity has provided him and his family with a renewed sense of hope, time, and the strength to keep believing in a brighter tomorrow.
