Driving change: Sports Cars for a Cause reshapes young lives in the Philippines

Access to education is still a problem throughout the Philippines. About 25% of the youth population, or nearly 11 million young Filipinos aged five to 24, are out of school. For many, especially those from low-income families, completing even high school can be difficult, and attending college can seem unattainable.

However, there are stories of tenacity and change behind these figures. One such story is Maybel’s. She now works in the admissions office of the Sisters of Mary School, helping review scholarship applications from students seeking the same opportunity she once received.

“My parents didn’t have a steady income. Life was difficult back then,” Maybel recalls.

Like millions of Filipino students, she faced the possibility of her education ending early.

“When I found out that the Sisters of Mary School offers free good quality education to poor students, I didn’t hesitate to apply,” she says.

Fortunately, she was accepted and went on to complete her high school education at the school.

At Sisters of Mary, students receive school supplies, meals, and housing, removing the financial burdens that often force young learners to drop out.

“I was able to focus on my studies because I don’t have to worry about how to pay for my schooling needs,” Maybel explains.

For students like Maybel, finishing high school is an important achievement, but it usually takes more than willpower. Partnerships and community-driven initiatives play a crucial part.

One such initiative is Sports Cars for a Cause, an annual event in Bonifacio Global City where sports cars gather not just to impress, but to raise funds for scholars at the Sisters of Mary School. The Calvin Ayre Foundation (CAF) has been one of the proud sponsors of the event for the last three years.

Through its support, CAF helps fund scholarships that open doors for students like Maybel, ensuring that financial hardship does not define their future.

Sr. Mylene Arambulo, Principal of Sisters of Mary Banneux Inc., highlights the impact of these partnerships: “As long as somebody will help sponsor the equipment and their studies, they are really eager to finish their education here in the Sisters of Mary, and they are very willing to help their families and their society.”

For Maybel, the scholarship transformed her education and changed her entire family’s trajectory.

“My parents felt at ease knowig they didn’t have to worry about financing my education,” she shares. “And in turn, they were able to focus on putting my two other siblings through school.”

Thanks to initiatives like Sports Cars for a Cause, supported by the Calvin Ayre Foundation, students across the Philippines are gaining access to opportunities that can transform their lives, turning dreams of education into tangible futures.

Graduating from Sisters of Mary also opened doors for Maybel beyond high school. Today, she is pursuing a degree at De La Salle Lipa while working to support herself and, when needed, her family.

“For me, this is success. I am able to provide for myself while working and studying at the same time,” she says, “Sometimes when my parents lack funds to support my siblings’ education, I help them out by giving financial support to my siblings.”

Maybel’s journey is just one example of how support can create lasting change.

For beneficiaries like Maybel, the impact is deeply personal.

“I want to thank them,” she says. “Through their generosity, they built a better future for us, the students here at Sisters of Mary.”
